A Spring Break to Remember

New mentors, familiar faces, and a season full of firsts.

We recently welcomed three new Friends to our team: Norman, Janet, and Sebastian. And rather than easing them in slowly, we did what we do best. We took them outside.

On the first day of spring break, youth and their mentors visited Temalpakh Farm, hosted by the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians. The kids tasted fresh vegetables grown right there on the land and made their own traditional leather pouches with artist Tony Soares. Every one of them went home with one. For our new mentors, it was an early reminder of how deeply rooted in community our work really is.

Throughout the week, Mr. Q brought his boys Cruz and Mario to La Quinta Park to bike, play, and cool off at the splash pad. Mr. Norman joined them often, spending time alongside Mr. Q before taking on his own cohort.

The week wrapped up with all of our mentors and most program youth joining Executive Director Karrie at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Our kids are regulars there, and it shows. They navigated the exhibits with confidence, climbed into cockpits, and may have each secretly decided they could fly one of those planes, if they needed to.

This spring reminded us that mentorship goes in every direction. Our kids learn from their Friends, and our newest Friends learn from the ones who have been at it longest. We could not ask for a better way to start the season.
