Learning Beyond the Classroom
Families Experience the Living Desert
Thanks to a generous grant from the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, our youth and their families spent a summer day discovering the animals, plants, and ecosystems that make our desert home so unique. Over fifty of us explored the park, asked questions, and experienced desert wildlife up close, many for the very first time.
One highlight was feeding the giraffes. For children who had never been to a zoo before, standing face-to-face with such a towering animal was unforgettable. These moments of wonder spark curiosity, broaden horizons, and help youth imagine new possibilities for themselves.
After a hot day of adventuring, everyone cooled off at the Oasis Splash Pad. Families played and recharged together, with mentors joining in to go down the slide and play in the water alongside them.
We know that growth happens not just for children but for families too. That is why we take a two-generation approach to mentorship, walking alongside youth and caregivers to nurture confidence, resilience, and strong bonds. Experiences like this remind us that when children and families are supported, they thrive.
We are deeply grateful to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens for making this day possible and for inspiring future generations to appreciate and protect the desert we call home.
