mayo 19, 2025 Simone Biles Inspires Youth During Mental Health Awareness Month In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, Friends of the Children chapters across the country gathered for a special virtual event with Olympic gold medalist, mental health advocate, and Friends of the Children spokesperson Simone Biles. We were honored to take part and hosted a community watch party at the Coachella Library. To build excitement, we watched Simone’s Olympic performances and made USA-themed signs to cheer her on. Before the event began, youth rolled out tumbling mats, practiced somersaults, and balanced on a makeshift “beam” made of tape on the floor. After watching Simone’s incredible routines, everyone was eager to show off their own moves. Simone opened the conversation by sharing her story and reflecting on her experience growing up in foster care. She spoke about the importance of having consistent, caring adults in her life and how they helped shape her path. Her honesty made a lasting impression on our youth and reaffirmed the power of long-term mentorship. She also guided the group through some of her favorite calming techniques, including breathing exercises she uses to manage stress and support her mental well-being. It was a timely reminder of the importance of mental health, especially during moments of challenge and growth. A standout moment came when one of our youth, Ellie, was chosen to ask Simone a question: “What’s your favorite gymnastics outfit?” Simone shared her love for the sparkly, bedazzled leotards she wore during a competition in Paris—a favorite among our group as well. With themed snacks, the presence of families, teachers, and one of our board members, the evening became more than just a virtual event. It was a celebration of joy, resilience, and what’s possible when young people feel seen, supported, and empowered. We’re incredibly thankful to Simone Biles for sharing her story and inspiring the next generation—not only through her athletic accomplishments but through her authenticity, compassion, and unwavering belief in youth.
