A Love Letter to Our Local Libraries

Where Curiosity Meets Community

You can learn a lot about a community by spending time in its libraries, and lately we have been spending a lot of time in ours. Across five libraries in the Coachella Valley, our youth and Friends have shown up for stories, snakes, ramen, crochet, and just about everything in between.

La Quinta Library

La quinta

This is the kind of place where kids can settle in and feel at home. Between the animals that live there, the cozy spaces to play, and the shelves full of stories waiting to be discovered, there is always a reason to come back. It's easy to see what Karina and Marisol are regulars here.

Palm Desert Library

Quiet corners, a great selection, and just the right atmosphere for a relaxed afternoon make this one a favorite. Belinda and her youth have made it part of their routine, picking out books and reading together over lunch.

Coachella Library

Firebirds library

There is always something happening here, from hands-on workshops to visits from special guests. Our youth have learned to crochet one stitch at a time, and when our friends at Gear It Forward and the Coachella Valley Firebirds came through, Sky and her sister read all about hockey and got creative with some art.

Indio Library

Ramen library

This library has a knack for bringing books to life through programs that introduce kids to new cultures and new ideas. Faith, Mia, and Ana experienced that firsthand with "Ramen for Everyone," building their own ramen bowls and practicing chopstick skills by picking up gummies. It is also a reliable stop on any adventure through Downtown Indio.

Cathedral City Library

Reptiles library

From storytime to hands-on encounters with the natural world, this library knows how to make learning feel like an adventure. One recent example is when Kevin and Zorro got to meet The Reptile Hunter here. They held snakes and lizards like pros while their Friends cheered them on... from a comfortable distance.

What we love about libraries goes beyond the books. They are welcoming and free, and they offer programs that introduce kids to new ways of looking at the world. During the summer months especially, when school is out and structure can be hard to come by, libraries give our youth a place to land. A place to be curious, creative, and right at home.

Thank you to our local libraries for being exactly what our community needs.
